What’s in My Bike Basket? Featuring Shauna Kupetz

You know that “this is too good to be true” feeling when you see an email in your inbox from someone you never thought would actually email you? That’s what I thought when I got my first email from Shauna at JAM. I think I was like, no way – this can’t be real. And then it was – this amazing shop keeper was asking if I wanted to become a part of one of the most artisan-friendly shops in town! I love featuring her this week for many reasons from her wonderful spirity, talent and smarts and  - because of course, she’s all about supporting the artisans in her store with what’s in her bike basket. Be sure to stop in and meet Shauna and you just may meet one of your local favorites in the shop – you never know who is jamming.

And, Shvivee :)

Girl Rising This Father’s Day

Good evening everyone. As I round out a great, relaxing day dedicated to my Dad, I am watching Girl Rising on CNN. I saw it in the theater for a special screening a few weeks ago that my amazing friend was able to bring to town. It was such a powerful collection of stories, that I can’t wait to finish watching it again tonight. It’s all about what happens when girls get an education – and what terrible things happen when they don’t.

Two of my favorite stories were ones that the fathers were heavily involved in – because I believe this isn’t a chick thing, a feminist thing, a girl power thing – this is a family issue, it’s a human issue. So I say to my Dad, to my family, and to my community – thank you for ensuring I understood the importance of education from elementary school through my MBA.

I will pay it forward.

If you have an opportunity, make sure to see this film. There is a particular story where bicycles are prevalent throughout the scene – they become the symbol of freedom and it will make all you bike lovers out there smile at their power to change lives.

Happy Father’s Day. If you’ve seen the film, please feel free to share your thoughts below

What’s in My Bike Basket? Featuring Nikki with Flora Apothecary

Playing off of the concept of what’s in my bag/purse/wallet etc in magazines, we thought it would be fun to showcase what’s in the bike baskets of very cool, talented, smart, stylish, crafty, bike lovers, or business ladies around our country.

It’s only fitting that we kick off the week by sharing what’s in Nikki with Flora Apothecary’s bike basket – because she’s been so welcoming to Bicyclette, introduced me to Lauren Kelly who does our bike basket liners exclusively – and just happens to make my favorite organic skincare products around.

Meet the Artisan: Lauren of Lauren Kelly Designs

Serendipity is amazing. I was at the MADE market this past holiday season and a very friendly and stylish woman comes up to my booth and essentially says that we need to start a new basket liner collection and that she could be the one to help make it happen. We met at the Madison Improvement Club at the top of 2013 and within a month, new basket liners were added to our Bicyclette collection. Lauren has a great sense of style, is a perfectionist and I love collaborating with her by sharing the feedback from our customers – we come up with new patterns, new colors and it’s fun to see all the smiles of delight when people discover that the basket liners can also be taken on the go!

It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Lauren, the woman behind the basket liners!

What inspired you to start making bike basket liners?
One of my favorite pastimes is beach cruising with my friends when the weather is beautiful, so when my best friend got a bike for her birthday I wanted to get her a matching liner. I never liked any of the liners I saw in bike stores or online, so I set out to make one with the help of my grandmother..

What do you love about bike riding in San Diego?
It’s a great way to get exercise, socialize and have fun all at the same time. I also love to bring my dogs while I’m out and about. The little ones love to ride in my basket with a dog pillow while my large dog Bentley loves to ride along side.

What’s in your bike basket?
Definitely my iPhone so I can connect with friends or take pictures, but my favorite basket accessory is a furry little long-haired Chihuahua named Peanut.

What’s up next for your product line? Do tell!
I’ve designed a downloadable step-by-step bicycle basket liner pattern for the beginner seamstress. In 12 colorful pages you can print out the sewing instructions and make your own basket liner in four different styles: one fabric , reversible (two fabrics), reversible with liner straps and reversible with straps and a dog pillow.
